Ann Nooney, American (1900-1964) Born in 1900 in New York, Ann Nooney was one of thousands of artists employed by President Roosevelt's Federal Works program (WPA) during the Great Depression following the economic collapse of 1929. She worked mainly in and around New York City, portraying all aspects of life in her many etchings and lithographs. Her work recorded streets in Brooklyn, river views, and waterfronts, as well as country scenes. Although little is known about her life (even her year of death date is unknown), it is clear in this print that she recorded everyday life and times with great empathy. 3 of her prints appeared in the "WPA Guide to New York City, 1939." |
